9:30 pm
>> there's really chilly air coming later next week for thanksgiving. the question is will it develop a storm for the travel period. we have a long time to look at that. but some of the models do do that. but strong indications that very chilly air will lock in before the end of the month. we could have the second coolest autumn day so far this year tomorrow. with highs in the low 40s but there ought to be a lot of sunshine. then a powerful wind locks in, pushes the temperatures back up again. the winds could gust to 35 miles an hour on friday. kind of a gray old day today. we knocked november's possible sunshine to 68%. but it's ahead of the 40% that's normal in november. temperatures hit 48 at wheeling and at highland park. itit was 48 elkgrove village.
9:31 pm
47 at o'hare. that's about normal this time of year. winds are blowing from the southwest there but northwest at midway airport. here are the temperatures across the area. tonight we're starting with some clouds. but the colder air will come in and in the morning flirting with freezing. that's the view from soft village down south. in kansas it snowed there in parts. you see the dusting of snow on our weather bug camera there. some rains at walton, kansas, today. and it was pretty chilly there with good rains. we had one storm. this one missed us to the south. this is missing us to the south as well. and there's another one tracking southward. but these are tugging cool air down. what's happening is the southern flank of cool air reaches into the midwest and these are churning along its perimeter. you see that better here. this is bitterly-cold air.
9:32 pm
and these impulses are moving along it. the question becomes how soon will these lay down the cover of snow because it's over the pack that the chilly air dipped into the dakotas today is able to ride farther southward. one thing is for sure. that's an effective barrier of this coming north and raining on us in any way. the rains are moving down the state. these were mixed with snow earlier today in kansas. and the lake effect is turning on. it will probably effect areas from porter county and laporte county the next couple days. this is cold air. these are highs. 37 in the twin cities. as you move north, the highs didn't get above zero today in the yukon. so it's very chilly and these are current temperatures. we're going to start tapping that air with greater frequency in the next week.
9:33 pm
but not right away. 41 is our temperature tonight. we'll have a chunk of this low windchill, chilly air coming in tomorrow. and then it'll pull back a bit on friday. give way a bit on saturday, turn cooler and a warmer puff of air sunday and monday before the real chill settles in after that. look at the low temperatures. it's interesting to look at these because you get an idea the expanse of the cool air. here it is. this is the really chilly stuff. the sun set today in barrow, alaska. won't see the sun again until january 21. that's going on all across northern north america. that's why the air mass up here grows cold as the snow pack expands and reflects away what little heat is left at this time of the year. for the short-term we expect the winds to go westerly. that chunk will be shot out of the area over the weekend. that's why we could be up
9:34 pm
flirting with upper 50s by late sunday and monday from the looks of things before the chill comes in. so here is the latest storm to track to the south of us. a ridge of high pressure whose north winds come down the lake set up some lake effect rain sleet or snow showers to go into michigan. not a big deal like last weekend's. and here's the packed isobars blowing the warm air back in by the weekend. look at the snows. seattle sits there, portland there. going to be one of these interesting situations where this cold air sends easterly winds up against the mountain slopes there. that could translate to areas around mt. rainier to big snows in the days ahead. and they could get two or three feet of snow because it's going to snow there for several days. kind of an interesting place to see snow stacking up. tonight cloudy, a few sprinkles
